30 Minute Composition #4 – B Minor

30 Minute Composition #4 – B Minor

These are turning out to be very valuable exercises. I feel like I am learning a lot about the connection of melody, harmony and form. It is easy to get yourself stuck in a melody without thinking about the underlying harmony. When I do fill out the harmony, and I haven’t actively thought about it while composing the melody, I’ve found it can not match the established form, maybe causing the phrase to be short or long. Sometimes you just need to scrap what you wrote and start it over. I did this a few times on the phrases.

Let me know what you think.

  1. I really like the form and the sound. The sudden “change” was pleasing to me as a trained musician.
