I just started with the free beginners course composing. I’m wondering: should a basic idea also end on the tonic or is starting with the tonic enough?
Caplin’s theory states that a basic idea prolongs tonic, but you are not restricted to that by any means. Think of it as a model to start from and modify. Many basic ideas have simple tonic prolongation, which is always very effective (I – V – I) or (I-IV-I). But many do not. Ultimately, you should experiment.
You’re back! 🙂
