I’m a new fledgling composer who just signed up to this site today. However, I have composed little bits of music by myself before. As someone who passed the ABRSM Grade 8 exam 2 years ago when I was 16, and have been told by my piano teacher that I have a knack for composing, what can I do work on my composition skills an 18 year old?
Passing your grade 8’s gives you a solid foundation. I passed my grade 8’s when I was about 16 as well, many years ago. The main benefits you’ll have are the ability to read music very well, the ability to hear music and understand it better than most, and exposure to a lot of literature.
The process will be the same for learning though, you’ll just probably get it quickly. I still recommend to everyone to go through the free course, and read through articles on the site. If they resonate with you, then you’ll enjoy the full 101 and 201 courses.
On top of that, try to compose a little every day. Don’t worry that you’ll not be writing amazing music on day 1. The goal is to practice, just like you would with your instrument.
There are many more helpful tips in the courses.
