I’d like to compose music and listen to it with a software that can provide me with good musical instruments. I’ve downloaded MuseScore, but whenever I play what I write, the piano sounds awful. I want something with a realistic sound for piano and for all of the instruments that form an orchestra.
Thank you in advance
Musescore does notation very well, but playback leaves a lot to be desired.
What I would look at is something like Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/. It is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and so you have the ability to use good quality piano libraries (VST/AU) instruments.
The biggest thing you can do, is separate out the process of composition, from the process of performance. In one, you are coming up with new ideas, editing, refining. In the other, you are trying to get as much expression as possible from the finished piece. If you separate them, you will have better results with both.
As far as free sample libraries, there are many to choose from. Here is a short list of free ones:
Some of these are soundfont format. Others are kontakt, or UVI. Kontakt is the industry standard for sample libraries, and you’ll have the most to choose from if you were to purchase the full kontakt player.
Thank you Jon. I’ll take a look at Reaper 🙂
