So, again in a nutshell:

I V iii vi ii I
D A fm bm em D

I iii/vi V ii/iv iii iv/I vi VI⇒III+ ii V⇒v I
D fm A bm fm bm bm G⇒G+ em B⇒b D

Thanks.

Apologies, it didnt get the formatting correct:

I V iii vi ii I
D A fm bm em D

That becomes:
I iii/vi V ii/iv iii iv/I vi VI⇒III+ ii V⇒v I

For the first progression:

1. I to V is functional, however V to iii is not really functional. It can sound okay sometimes because of the shared notes (in this case A and F#m share a C# and an A, but the the E or F#.) Also, your chords don’t match your roman numerals. I assume you are drying to write in D major, so the Fm should be F#m.

2. iii to vi to ii is all functional.

3. ii back to I is not functional. Generally you want to place a V or a vii before the I again.

Remember, the key to using the chart, is maintaining the left to right order, and only moving backwards along the arrows.

For the 2nd progression, when adding applied dominants and viiº chords, they must apply to the chord that follows. We also don’t normally use non-dominant chords as applied chords, so you won’t normally see iii/vi because that is just a I chord.

I´ve done a few more exercises and now i can see clearly what you meant in this message.
Thanks Jon and please keep it up.
