30 Minute Composition #5: Prelude in Eb Major

December 10, 2012 By Jon Brantingham 2 Comments

In my last post, I talked about how I was going to get back into composing short pieces in 30 minutes or less. So here, I am putting my money where my mouth is. This was composed 10 December, in 29 minutes and 50 seconds exactly.

Prelude in Eb Major

For this piece I was aiming for something slow and solemn. Like a peaceful meditation, nothing is really meant to be harsh. The harmony is mostly diatonic, and the structure simple.

What I love about exercises like this, is that I now have a slow simple theme that I could, for instance, use in a symphony or piano sonata, or for theme and variations.

Stay tuned for more… a lot more.
